My ancestors owned one of those factories. Does anyone know when the pig bristle industry began in Vilkaviskis?<br /><br />Can anyone explain how a town whose population was well over half Jewish in the latter part of the 19th century could have developed such a significant pig bristle industry? Would this have involved both Jewish and non-Jewish workers or non-Jewish only? Equally significant, what would have been the attitude of the rabbinical authorities?<br /><br />Am working on it !!!!!!!<br />RalphRalphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581858423360080743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023106825464522132.post-54582334649509950902009-11-04T11:24:00.000-08:002009-11-04T11:29:28.872-08:00A great site for Vilkaviskis pictures<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc5ALh2eoT7vKylBIZgCx6PF0PR-qxRH3FyO7yNjeh8V0qKKHmmMOa6y70GijXydo0GyNg2e2tG21pAYpVarN2jJYNo9hcCZ54W4Nhsb7HodXkdVyy0DB0ZHlwVsvkDcrmMe5o4ewSJku9/s1600-h/Museum.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc5ALh2eoT7vKylBIZgCx6PF0PR-qxRH3FyO7yNjeh8V0qKKHmmMOa6y70GijXydo0GyNg2e2tG21pAYpVarN2jJYNo9hcCZ54W4Nhsb7HodXkdVyy0DB0ZHlwVsvkDcrmMe5o4ewSJku9/s320/Museum.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400332620950199858" border="0" /></a><br />If you have never been to Vilkaviskis and want to get a feel of the town go to<br /><a href="http://www.miestai.net/forumas/showthread.php?t=2549">http://www.miestai.net/forumas/showthread.php?t=2549</a><br />Its a Lithuanian site with so many pictures of the town.<br /><br />Regards<br /><br />RalphRalphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581858423360080743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023106825464522132.post-30171851729702362822009-11-02T06:39:00.000-08:002009-11-02T06:53:34.993-08:00Pilvaskai Market Day ,an old photograph<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib87YUtn-wq3fPK4iGv0lFVpznMgM6f26rBel5GMiNmrEiecR_CT67JCfjgMmu0qeGz44Atg3AspvV5750M8IK6V7sbtZrdo_UUZBRUr42xuTOl4gS33cOYdtbukQMSguPgp_5-Q1iYPp5/s1600-h/1+Pilvishok++Lithuania+pre-war+smaller.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 226px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib87YUtn-wq3fPK4iGv0lFVpznMgM6f26rBel5GMiNmrEiecR_CT67JCfjgMmu0qeGz44Atg3AspvV5750M8IK6V7sbtZrdo_UUZBRUr42xuTOl4gS33cOYdtbukQMSguPgp_5-Q1iYPp5/s320/1+Pilvishok++Lithuania+pre-war+smaller.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399516524222568978" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:100%;">This picture was kindly sent by Chris Marks -<br />will be adding it soon to my site<br /><br />Ralph</span>Ralphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581858423360080743noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023106825464522132.post-63962678680380360902009-11-01T10:55:00.000-08:002009-11-01T11:00:50.195-08:00Candles are burning in the Jewish Cemetery in Vilkaviskis<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhC4AJj65WBeVkNgoMoD0jeVyN54kCoKVOZajEFDDuDRAkLdUrEEmu69ZsePPu7o7PbQS5gpS7C5-b032l17Qh0-Bp5cgsVZ-qyYmT7MRd14A-DA6HDiL-MwW8W3V_9W4sPciTteOR-xcQ/s1600-h/DSCF3484.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhC4AJj65WBeVkNgoMoD0jeVyN54kCoKVOZajEFDDuDRAkLdUrEEmu69ZsePPu7o7PbQS5gpS7C5-b032l17Qh0-Bp5cgsVZ-qyYmT7MRd14A-DA6HDiL-MwW8W3V_9W4sPciTteOR-xcQ/s320/DSCF3484.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399212007667706546" border="0" /></a><br />I have just heard from Algis that he lit a candle in the Jewish Cemetery in Vilkaviskis for the memory of Shmarihyu Pustapetski<br /><br />Thanks AlgisRalphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01581858423360080743noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023106825464522132.post-83925958825173705162009-11-01T07:20:00.000-08:002009-11-01T07:45:54.056-08:00The passing of Shmarihyu Pustapetski<span style="font-size:85%;">It is with great sadness that I have to tell of the passing of Shmarihyu Pustapetski.<br />Shmarihyu passed away at the age of 94.
